2010 MSMA Delegate Report
The 54th annual AAMA conference was hosted by the South East region September 24-27, 2010 and was held at the Hilton Hotel in the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. We started each day with a wonderful breakfast hosted by the AAMA where we met new friends and caught up with old ones. Continuing education was offered from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm every day except on Sunday. Friday evening the AAMA Excel awards were presented during a dessert social. Minnesota did not receive any national awards this year. A complete list of AAMA Excel winners is available on the AAMA web site. Saturday was another full day of continuing education as well as a House of Delegate training session attended by Sue, Amanda, Terri, Char and Donna. Char joined AAMA leaders in a special session designed for first time conference attendees. Later that evening Sue, Amanda and Terri attended a forum for all state society Presidents and Presidents Elect where they learned about the AAMA facebook page. Sunday, the AAMA House of Delegates was called to order by Speaker of the House, Christine Hollander, CMA (AAMA). The colors were presented by the Florida ROTC Cadets, the Pledge of Allegiance was recited and the National Anthem was sung. AAMA life members were recognized. There were 616 AAMA members pre-registered for the conference and we learned that, nationwide, there are over 27,000 AAMA members at this time. The certifying board announced, as of January 2011, CMA examinees-immediately upon completing the exam- will receive a definite pass or fail notice called an Official Performance Notification. The morning session ended after reports from the nominating committee and nominations from the floor. We listened to each candidate’s platform and got the opportunity to speak to them individually after that session. Reference committee sessions were held in the afternoon and the polls were opened so we could vote for the candidates. Donald Balasa, Executive Director of the AAMA, presented information on the legal issues around medication aides and announced that he has a blog on the AAMA website. The two (2) proposed bylaws amendments regarding qualifications for active and associate membership were not adopted and were sent back to the membership committee. There was one (1) proposed bylaw amendment regarding an increase in student membership dues to $25 per year. This amendment was adopted. The one (1) proposed bylaw regarding wording that defines members at large was adopted. The HOD adopted the following resolutions: Increase the awareness of Ovarian Cancer and an increase in AAMA dues from $67 to $77 beginning 2012. All HOD activities are available on the AAMA website. Results of the election were announced. A list of winners is available on the AAMA web site. The state of Hawaii was officially recognized as a state society and was given their charter. There being no further business, the HOD was adjourned. Monday was another full day of continuing education. That evening, our President, Sue was honored at the Presidents’ banquet. The outgoing AAMA president, Bonnie Bruntz, CMA (AAMA) was honored. The incoming AAMA president, Betty Springer, CMA-A (AAMA) and the newly elected trustees were also recognized. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the MSMA members for allowing us the opportunity to serve as their delegates this year and welcome any comments or questions from the membership.
